There is freedom waiting for you,

On the breezes of the sky,

And you ask "What if I fall?"

Oh but my darling, "What if you fly?"

- Erin Hanson

Hi and welcome to our website 'Sailing to Roam'

We're an Aussie family of five who took a leap of faith a bought a yacht, sight unseen, in the Caribbean. We left our jobs, home, family and friends to experience a different way of life. We flew into Grenada in Feb 2018 and after two and a half months of  back breaking boat jobs, we finally set sail. Oh did I mention we weren't sailors and only came up with the idea two years earlier?!? Join us on an adventure of a lifetime as we sail the Caribbean and beyond. Read about our trials and tribulations as we navigate our way through unknown waters, boat maintenance and home schooling. Without any firm plans, we will be relying on the wind to point us in the right direction. Do we sail to the Mediterranean, do we go to Mexico and the Sea of Cortez, should we go through the Pacific, back to Australia? We'd love to hear your opinion, get in contact and let us know where you think we should go! This site has been designed to share our stories and adventures with our family, friends and followers.

Read all about who we are and how this adventure came about and hopefully it will inspire you to get out there and have your own adventure, whatever that may be.

Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram and subscribe to our mailing list for blog post notifications.

This isn't a regular kind of blog. I post all of our stories and photos on Facebook and Instagram as I know everyone is busy and may not have time to constantly look at my blog. So this site is primarily a repeater of the information I have posted on Facebook and Instagram.

I occasionally have people ask how they can send us a lil' something as a thank you for the information or inspiration we provide, so for that reason we created a Buy Us A Beer button. It absolutely makes our week when we receive a donation and every little bit helps towards our cruising kitty. So thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

When we first came up with our idea, I read every blog I could find. I distinctly remember seeing that a few families had been in their local paper and I thought to myself, that will be us in a few years! Well it' only taken two years and here we are! Hopefully our sto...

When we decided we were going to do this, to buy a boat on the other side of the world and sail off into the sunset, we didn't really have any idea about the logistics of it all. We knew we didn't want to start in Australia for a few reasons. Firstly, we live in South...

There’s still so much to do before we leave, will we ever get it all finished? Preparing for this trip has involved doing at least one thing towards our goal each day, even if that meant listening to a pod cast or watching a YouTube sailing channel, each thing would ke...

Tip #1 for saving $$ for world travel - collect frequent flyer points. I managed to get all 5 of us to New York for free (not including taxes) by collecting points, it’s definitely worth while! I did it by signing up to credit cards that offered large amounts of points...

When we came up with this crazy idea, we knew we had to devise lots of different ways to save money. One idea we thought might work was to host international uni students in our home. Dave’s brother and sister in-law had done it for a while and it had worked well for t...

When we came up with the idea of buying a sailboat and traveling to exotic places, Dave had never sailed and I hadn’t sailed since I was a kid. Luckily we didn’t let that stop us! We decided the first port of call (no pun intended) was to buy a boat and learn how to sa...
